A fifth-floor fire at JFK Towers in Durham sent four residents to the hospital for smoke inhalation late Sunday night, the fire department reported.
One resident also suffered first degree burns on his hands and wrists, according to a news release from deputy chief Christopher Iannuzzi. A firefighter was treated at the scene for dehydration.
The blaze at 4900 N. Roxboro Road was reported at 11:19 p.m. and was under control within 18 minutes, Iannuzzi said.
A room on the fifth floor was heavily damaged by fire, and there was significant water damage on the fifth and fourth floors, Iannuzzi said.

The American Red Cross is assisting one displaced resident.
The fire was attributed to improper disposal of smoking materials, Iannuzzi said.
