2-year-old girl found in pond near Clayton dies

A 2-year-old girl who was pulled from a golf course pond died Thursday night, about three hours after she was found, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl, whose name has not been released, was found around 6 p.m. by a golfer at the Riverwood Golf Club near Clayton, said Capt. Jeff Caldwell. The girl was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh, where she died around 9 p.m.

Investigators think the toddler wandered away from her home and into the pond about 200 feet away, Caldwell said. They do not plan to file charges.

“This is seen as a tragic accident,” Caldwell said. “Of course our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”
