Police are investigating a body found in a Clayton creek bed on Thursday afternoon.
Teenagers found the man’s body just before 5 p.m., in a creek below the Amelia Village Apartments off Amelia Church Road.
The body was badly decomposed, and officers couldn’t immediately identify the man or his race, said Clayton spokeswoman Stacy Beard. The body was pulled from the water shortly before 7 p.m. and was on its way to the medical examiner’s office in Raleigh where an autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning, Beard said.
Beard said Johnston County sheriff’s deputies also are investigating the body. She said the sheriff’s department never located a person reported missing about a month ago.
Police had not touched the body as of 5:16 p.m., and it’s unclear if foul play is involved. Beard said detectives searched the creek for evidence and were beginning interviews Thursday evening.
