An 18-month-old girl drowned July 10 in a backyard swimming pool near Clayton.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a 9 p.m. call and tried unsuccessfully to revive the child. Public information officer Tammy Amaon said the death has been ruled accidental and that the sheriff’s office will file no charges.
The sheriff’s office said the call came from 975 Lee Road south of Clayton and that the mother and daughter were visiting the home. The mother asked another adult in the home to watch the 18-month-old girl while she was preparing some food, Amaon said. The child was later found in the pool.
Jeff Caldwell, captain of support services for Johnston’s Sheriff Office, would not offer an explanation for how the child ended up in the pool, saying he couldn’t share the case’s investigative notes because of the age of the victim.
