Chapel Hill police and fire officials brought the Durham County Sheriff’s Bomb Disposal Unit in to respond to a report of a suspicious package on Franklin Street earlier Monday.
The item could not be identified, so bomb technicians detonated the item at the scene. Police Chief Chris Blue said the item looked unusual, but couldn’t provide additional details about the item.
Franklin Street was reopened shortly before 1 p.m. after the police closed the 700 block of Franklin Street between Boundary Street and Estes Drive while investigating the report.
