Almost 700 Duke Energy customers were without power Tuesday morning because a falling tree along Old Durham Road took down electric lines, utility officials and police said.
The outage was listed as beginning at 12:12 a.m. on Duke’s outage-reporting website. At 6:40 a.m., it showed 681 customers without power in an area on both sides of Fordham Boulevard, but with the bulk of the area south of the highway in the portion of town that straddles the Orange County-Durham County line.
Police Sgt. Stephen Seagroves said police were notified about the tree around 1 a.m. and closed both sides of the road.
Duke Energy spokesperson Jeff Brooks said three poles that were damaged will need to be replaced and work to restore service could take well into the afternoon to complete. Brooks estimates power will be restored by 4 p.m.
