An elderly Holly Springs woman was killed Tuesday morning when she turned in front of a truck on Interstate 440 at Western Boulevard, according to Raleigh police.
Alice Bernice Barrett, 84, was driving alone in her Subaru in the high-speed lane of I-440 when she slowed and merged into the center lane, where she almost came to a stop, according to a police report.
Barrett then turned into the right lane, apparently attempting to get off at the eastbound Western Boulevard exit, when she was hit by a two-axled truck going 55 mph, according to the report.
The impact sent the Subaru spinning off the right side of the road, while the truck ended up in the median.
The driver of the truck, Brandon Montrell Taylor, 26, of Goldsboro, was not injured, according to police.
The accident took place at about 10:15 a.m. and forced police to close the westbound lanes of the Beltline at Western Boulevard for more than two hours.
