Free dental clinic helps 25 in honor of Chapel Hill shooting victims

A free dental clinic held in honor of the three Chapel Hill shooting victims helped 25 patients on Saturday.

The patients saved $9,000 through the event hosted by Wake Smiles, a nonprofit dental clinic serving low-income, uninsured adults of Wake County.

Wake Smiles organized the event in honor of Deah Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19 , who were shot to death on Feb. 10.

Barakat was a student at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. His wife also planned to attend the school.

Their neighbor, Craig Hicks, faces first-degree murder charges in the killings. Prosecutors plan to pursue the death penalty.

The killings sparked questions about whether Hicks’ motive was the escalation of a parking dispute or a hate crime against the three Muslim students.
