City and Raleigh-Durham International Airport firefighters and members of the State Bureau of Investigations Clandestine Lab Unit were at the edge of the airport Friday morning, investigating material that was found near a gate and was deemed suspicious.
RDU spokesman Patrick Glace said the investigation determined the material was illegally dumped trash.
Several hazardous-materials units from the city fire department were dispatched a little after 8:30 a.m. to Globe Road and Brier Creek Parkway, a short way outside the northwest part of the airport. A road leads from there into the facility.
Firefighters left the scene about two hours later.
RDU said the incident did not affected flight operations.
The material was near a gate that blocks vehicles access to the airport property, officials said.
