A fox killed Monday morning by a construction worker who said the animal was being aggressive had rabies, Raleigh police said Wednesday.
The worker encountered the fox on Westridge Drive, north of Carroll Middle School off Six Forks Road, police said. It was not clear how the worker killed the fox.
The evening before, a resident on Lynwood Lane, told police that a fox bit a resident’s foot and attacked a cat.
Lynwood Lane is south of Carroll Middle School and about a half mile from where the worker killed the fox Monday. Authorities say it’s not known if the animals were the same one.
Wake County Animal Control officers took the fox’s body to a state laboratory, which made the rabies diagnosis.
Police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan said residents who have animal concerns but are not facing an emergency can contact police at 919-831-6311. Emergencies should be reported to 911, she said.
