Heavy damage to Raleigh home in early morning blaze

A fire that a passer-by reported early Sunday morning after seeing flames coming from a two-story house heavily damaged the structure before firefighters got it under control, they reported.

The fire at 1112 Formal Garden Way south of downtown was reported about 4:40 a.m., officials said.

Flames were coming from the roof and the front of the house when the first fire trucks arrived, Capt. W.P. Gaster, a city fire investigator, said.

Gaster said the fire started accidentally.

The two people who lived in the house were unhurt. The fire damaged 75 percent of the building, Gaster said.
