Dr. Jose Cabanas, former Wake County EMS deputy director, will return from Austin, Texas, to lead the agency in December, officials said Thursday.
Cabanas was deputy director of Wake EMS from February 2010 until he left to take over leadership of Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services in September 2011.
The Wake top job has a dual title of director and medical director, according to the announcement.
A statement from EMS said Dr. Jeff Williams, who has been interim director since Dr. Brent Myers resigned in April to take another job, will become deputy medical director, a new, full-time position.
The medical director position is authorized for a salary of between $157,721 and $274,344.
Wake EMS operates 35 ambulances from 18 stations in the county.
