Raleigh police say foul play not suspected in man’s death

Police have released the name of a man found dead in a creek off South Wilmington Street on Tuesday evening after officers responded to a drowning call.

Andrew Jackson Cherry Jr., 63, was found lying partially in Rocky Branch Creek, near a greenway path behind the South Wilmington Street Center homeless shelter, at about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say it does not appear that Cherry died as a result of foul play, but a medical examiner will determine how he died.
