A fire spotted by a passing police officer damaged about half of a vacant house Monday morning, firefighters said.

Fire investigators listed the blaze as having started by accident. Neighbors told police that the house at 760 Quarry St., near Ligon Middle School, was unoccupied, and firefighters listed it as unoccupied in a report on the fire.

Firefighters said they were called at 5:53 a.m. and had the fire under control 15 minutes later.
