Police charged a man Saturday with beating and trying to strangle a unidentified 39-year-old woman.
Dainon Jamal Whitley, 26, of 4705 N. New Hope Road, Apt. C1, Raleigh, was charged with misdemeanor assault on a female and two felonies, assault by strangulation and a second-degree forcible sex offense, according to reports.
Police accused Whitley of striking the woman in the head and face and using his hands to try and choke her, leaving marks around her throat, the report stated. Whitley also is accused of forcing the woman to engage in a sex act, the report stated.
The victim and Whitley knew each other, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

He is being held in the Wake County Detention Center until his court hearing at 9 a.m. Monday.
