Residents can drop off unwanted or expired medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at two Raleigh pharmacies.
The drop-off event will be at Blue Ridge Pharmacy at 2601 Blue Ridge Road, across from Rex Hospital; and Josef’s Pharmacy at 2100 New Bern Ave. Prescription and over-the-counter medications will be accepted.
The City of Raleigh Substance Abuse Advisory Commission, the police, housing and neighborhoods department, and the public utilities department are sponsoring the free event to help prevent abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
Children ages 12 to 17 abuse such drugs more than any other illicit drug except marijuana, according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the city said in a news release. Drop-off events aim to prevent access to unwanted to expired medications.

Such events also keep medications out of the water system. When they are flushed, drugs can taint rivers, streams, lakes and drinking-water supplies, according to the city.
