A 16-year-old is suspected of shooting a man in Durham to death earlier this month.
U.S. Marshals arrested Shawn Leroy Butler, 16, of Durham on Mine Valley Road in North Raleigh on Wednesday. Authorities suspect he fired a gun into an occupied building on the 600 block of Lee Street off North Alston Avenue on the night of Aug. 9.
Rakwon Smith, 18, was wounded in the shooting, and police reported two days later that he had died. The building was Smith’s home, according to police.
Butler and Smith are acquaintances, according to investigators. Police say that the “incident does not appear to have been random.”
