Fuquay-Varina man charged with pill fraud

An 18-year old Fuquay-Varina man faces a felony charge after fraudulently attempting to obtain pain medication from a pharmacy, according to police.

Lewis Edward Newkirk, of 613 Lombardy Road, was arrested Saturday by Fuquay-Varina police. An arrest warrant shows Newkirk tried to obtain 120 tablets of Oxycodone from the Walgreens at 1401 N. Main St., Fuquay-Varina.

According to the warrant, Newkirk “presented and uttered a prescription purportedly issued under the authority of Wyatt Thompson, PA-C, of Medmart Urgent Care to obtain the controlled substance; when in fact, this prescription was created without the knowledge or consent of the listed practitioner.”

Newkirk was also issued misdemeanor charges of possession of up to one-half ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed gun.

His bond was set at $15,000. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday .
