Cary police charge man with statutory rape, cyberbullying of 14-year-old

Police arrested a 20-year-old Cary man early Thursday, charging that he engaged in sexual acts with a 14-year-old girl and cyberbullied her by posting about it online.

Mario Tapia-Lopez was arrested shortly after midnight at his home at 203 Merriwood Drive, records show.

In arrest warrants they obtained, police said the sexual behavior happened between March 1 and July 31 this year. They charged Tapia-Lopez with statutory rape.

The posting “describing sexual intercourse actions” went online between Oct. 21 and Oct. 30, police said in one warrant.

The cyberbullying charge is a misdemeanor.

Tapia-Lopez was held in lieu of $152,000 bail and scheduled to appear in court later Thursday.
