Police: Durham sneaker-snatch leads to chase, crash, arrest

One man was charged with robbery and a second was being sought after what Durham police said was the theft of a pair of sneakers Wednesday night and a car chase by the robbery victim that ended in a crash.

It started about 9:30 p.m. in the 4500 block of Rocky Springs Road in west Durham when the robbery victim, whose age was not disclosed, met a buyer for a pair of sneakers he had advertised on the Craigslist website.

A man grabbed the sneakers without paying and got into a car that sped off, police said.

The victim got into a car and began chasing the first car, and they headed north on Cole Mill Road toward the Eno River State Park until the first car crashed into a tree at Umstead Road.

D’Montaye Greene, 20, was arrested there and charged with common law robbery, police said.

A second man fled on foot, and police were seeking him Thursday.

A third man was questioned but not charged, police said. Durham County sheriff’s deputies and State Highway Patrol troopers helped police as the chase went out of the city, they said.

Greene was being held in the Durham County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
