Raleigh police: Gun-waving man at road intersection hoped to steal car

A Clayton man was accused Sunday night of waving a gun while he stood in a Raleigh street intersection and trying to steal cars.

Police said they got calls shortly after 8 p.m. that a man was waving a gun around and seemingly pointing it at cars at Rock Quarry Road and Riverbrooke Drive.

At Riverbrooke and Crowfield drives, a block away, police found Darius Brandon Drakeford, 20, of 206 Lynshire Ave. in Clayton about 8:20 p.m., according to police reports.

They arrested him on three counts of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The charges related to one vehicle in which two people were riding and a second vehicle that was driven by a woman alone.

Police did not say if officers recovered the gun that witnesses had reported, but an arrest warrant stated that the dangerous weapon was a rifle.

Drakeford was held in lieu of $50,000 bail and scheduled to appear before a judge Monday.
