Suspect arrested in slaying of Durham man found in car on W. Carver St.

Chan Taraves Thomas, wanted for murder in the shooting of a man found dead in his car on West Carver Street in early December, has been arrested and brought to Durham to face charges, police said Thursday.

Police found Thomas, 35, in Burlington earlier this week, and he was booked into the Durham County Detention Center on Wednesday on charges of murder, shooting into an occupied car and three traffic charges from when Durham police spotted him Jan. 8 and he fled, spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

Kenneth Bernard Covington, 26, who lived in Durham, was dead when police found him in the car in the 200 block of West Carver Street a little before 1 a.m. on Dec. 3, they said.

Police said Jan. 8 that they had sworn out arrest warrants for Thomas, including the one for murder, and asked for the public’s help in finding him.

Thomas was held without bail, which is state law requires for murder charges.
