Wake deputies: Shooting out car tire was road-rage incident

Wake County sheriff's deputies went to a Granville County man's home Wednesday night and charged him with shooting out a tire on a moving car during what they said appeared to be a road-rage incident.

Charles Ward Ayers, 46, was arrested about 10:15 p.m. at his residence at 665 Walter Ridge Drive, a Wake Forest address in Granville County. He was charged with felony shooting into an occupied vehicle because it was moving and occupied and with misdemeanor damage to property.

Earlier Wednesday, Ayers had shot at another man’s car while the man was driving it and flattened the right-rear tire, an arrest warrant said.

Capt. James Stevens, sheriff’s office spokesman, said Thursday that the case grew out of a road-rage incident on Durham Road near Camp Kanata Road and that deputies were still investigating the details.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Stevens declined to disclose what type of gun was involved, citing the continuing investigation.

Deputies did not say in the charges if they believed Ayers was aiming at the tire or hit it by chance.

A magistrate set Ayers bail at $75,000 because of the felony level of the shooting charge. Ayers was due in court Thursday.
