Raleigh cops charge man tried to take officer’s gun, wanted to shoot her

A 24-year-old Raleigh man was due in court Tuesday on charges that he tried to take a police officer's gun and intended to shoot her with it during an altercation at a downtown bar.

Jason Edward Froeber, 24, of 3909 Headwater Court was in The Raleigh Times bar on East Hargett Street when he got into a dispute with Officer D.L. Montemurro shortly before midnight Friday and, arrest warrants charged, struck her and tried to get her Smith & Wesson handgun.

Montemurro was working an off-duty security detail at the bar, police said.

In the arrest warrants, police charged Froeber intended to shoot Montemurro. They did not say what led to the dispute.

Police charged him with assaulting a law enforcement officer and attempted common law robbery involving the gun.

Saturday, while he was in custody at the Wake County Detention Center, Froeber was charged with damage to personal property and disorderly conduct, records showed.

He was held for court in lieu of $91,500 bail for all the charges.
