$1.49 bag of chips leads to $250,000 bail in Raleigh stabbing case

A Rocky Mount man stabbed a woman over a $1.49 bag of jalapeno cheese chips in downtown Raleigh early Sunday, police charged in an arrest warrant.

Officers arrested Thomas Earl Mercer shortly after 4 a.m. at 219 S. Wilmington St., according to records.

They charged Mercer, 33, with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and robbery with a dangerous weapon, saying he used a black, folding knife to attack the woman in order to get a bag of jalapeno Cheetos worth $1.49.

Police believed Mercer lived at 1232 Griffin St. in Rocky Mount when they brought him to the Wake County Detention Center, but he gave booking officials an address of 4137 Sunset Ave.

Mercer was held in lieu of $250,000 bail for a Monday court appearance.
