Man charged with downtown Durham robbery try

Police arrested a man Monday afternoon, saying he had walked into a downtown PNC bank branch and claimed to have an explosive in an unsuccessful robbery attempt.

Antonio Cornelius Cortez, 26, was arrested a few blocks from the bank at 500 W. Morgan St., police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

He was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

In the attempt, officials said, the man came into the bank and gave a teller a note threatening use of an explosive device. Nothing was seen, however.
