Body found in Durham pond was decapitated

The body of Trinity James Wilkins was decapitated when it was found in a pond Jan. 19, a Durham police spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Andrew Koko Scheper, 30, of Durham was arrested Jan 27 and charged with killing Wilkins. He is being held in the Durham County Jail without bond.

Wilkins, 38, was also known as Trinity Smith, according to police.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive, but they have said Wilkins and Scheper knew each other and that the homicide does not appear to have been a random act.

Wilkins’ family filed a missing persons report with police on Jan. 15, saying they had not seen him since Nov. 24.

Volunteers who were cleaning up a pond near the intersection of Roxboro Street and Club Boulevard found his body wrapped in a blanket or rug. Investigators have not said how Wilkins died.
