A Raleigh man was hit and killed Wednesday night as he crossed Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard downtown, police said.
Manuel Pena, 58, of 824-E Lenoir Street was walking across the boulevard at Coleman Street about 8 p.m. when he was struck by a Chrysler van. A family member told police that Pena had bad eyesight and did not see cars on the street, according to a report prepared by Officer M.B. Patillo Jr.
The van's driver, Jahmal Latee Washington, 29, of 2707 Fox Tail Court, Raleigh, was charged with driving with a revoked license and without insurance. Washington's van was going the speed limit of 35 mph when it struck Pena, according to Patillo's report.
