The maroon sedan in this surveillance photo is the target of a Durham County Sheriff’s Office investigation into fatal shooting Thursday evening, Oct. 20, of 33-year-old Eric Ray.

Sheriff’s deputies investigating a Thurday night killing on Angier Avenue want to know more about a maroon sedan and a man seen walking away from it.

Eric Ray, 33, who lived at 3212 Fayetteville St. in Durham, was found dead in the 3700 block of Angier Avenue. A Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said investigators think he was walking home from work.

Deputies initially said thought the car, seen in a surveillance video at a convenience store, was a Nissan Sentra or an Altima, but they backed off that description Friday.

The car was in the area around the time Ray was slain, about 7 p.m., and they distributed pictures of it in hopes of generating information from the public.

They also distributed a video that shows a man, apparently wearing a dark hoodie, get out of the car and walk away from the convenience store.

Deputies don’t yet know why anyone would attack Ray, the spokeswoman said.

Angier Avenue was closed in the area of the shooting for several hours while crime scene technicians and investigators gathered evidence.

The Sheriff’s Office asked anyone with information to contact investigators at 919-560-0900 or Durham CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200. Durham CrimeStoppers offers rewards for information leading to an arrest in felony cases.
