Police on Wednesday night charged a 50-year-old man with Monday's robbery of a Wells Fargo bank branch on Oberlin Road and with two Wells Fargo robberies and two Walmart robberies in December and February.

Johnny Vazquez was arrested about 10:30 p.m. at his apartment at 211 Ashe Ave., off Hillsborough Street near North Carolina State University, records showed.

Vazquez was charged with five counts of common law robbery, which indicates no weapon was used. He is accused of robbing the Wells Fargo at 601 Oberlin Road on Monday and on Jan. 8 as well as a Dec. 8 robbery at a Wells Fargo branch at 2600 Hillsborough Road and Walmart robberies on Dec. 27 and Feb. 27.

The robber on Monday was clearly seen on a security-camera picture that police distributed that day. The robber appears to have salt-and-pepper hair, but Vazquez had all-dark hair when he was arrested.

The cash taken in the robberies ranged from $1,480 at a Walmart to $8,500 on Jan. 8 at the Wells Fargo branch, according to arrest warrants.

Vazquez was held overnight on a total of $250,000 bail and scheduled for a court appearance Thursday.
