A 26-year-old man is charged with killing his mother’s dog Saturday by cutting off its head, police say.

The charges against Nicholas Dalton Nanes say he killed the dog, a mini pinscher-Chihuahua mix, “by decapitation with a knife.”

The charges also say he stole the dog from his mother.

Nanes is accused of felony cruelty to animals and felony larceny of a dog.

Police arrested Nanes at his home in an apartment complex on Arbor View Drive, off N.C. 55 near Green Hope Road.

Capt. Randall Rhyne, who heads the Investigations Division of Cary police, said Monday that police did not yet have a complete picture of why the dog was killed, and the case remained under investigation.

Paperwork setting Nanes’s bail at $40,000 said he was reported to have killed another dog within the past three years, but Rhyne said investigators were still trying to verify that.

If Nanes posts bail, a magistrate made it a condition of pretrial release that he may not have any animals.
