A Johnston County fire chief pocketed thousands of dollars from his own department for work never performed on fire equipment, officials say.
Blackmon’s Crossroads Chief Kenan Kearney was charged with five counts of financial fraud, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.
Kearney, of Four Oaks, submitted fraudulent invoices and received more than $14,000 in payment for work never completed, according to a press release on his arrest.
He was jailed under a $25,000 secured bond.
The investigation was initiated by county finance department officials alerting county detectives and remains ongoing, the release said.
