Suspect dies in ‘medical distress’ during Raleigh drug bust, police report

One of two men being arrested on drug charges late Wednesday went into what was described officially as "medical distress" and died later at a hospital, police said Thursday.

Officials did not disclose the man’s name, age or where he was from because they were trying to notify next of kin, they said in a statement.

Drug investigators were arresting the man who later died and Dextro James White, 40, of Jonesborough, Ga., at Rose Lane and Community Drive between 9:30 p.m.  and 10 p.m.

Because the man died in police custody, the case was turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation, police said.

“While in custody, one subject began to exhibit signs of medical distress. Raleigh Police Department personnel immediately contacted EMS, who transported him to WakeMed. Several hours after arriving at WakeMed, the subject died,” the statement said.

Police did not disclose what charges they had against the man who died.

Dextro James White CCBI

White was charged with maintaining a vehicle or building for drug purposes and carrying a concealed weapon.

White was held in lieu of $5,000 bail pending a court appearance.
