Drug probe leads to arrests of two men in Craven County

A 64-year-old Craven County man was being held on $3 million bail on multiple drug charges that resulted from an investigation by Havelock police and NCIS agents at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, police said Monday.

Derek Christopher Hines, who police said lives in Havelock, was charged last week with six counts of trafficking in opium or heroin; manufacturing a Schedule II drug, the group that includes cocaine; possession with intent to sell a Schedule II drug and maintaining a vehicle as a place to keep drugs.

The charges stemmed from a joint investigation that began Oct. 27, police said. It included them, NCIS, the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office and police in Morehead City.

Last month, Havelock police arrested Solomon Jones, 62, of Maysville, in Jones County, on four counts of trafficking and one count of maintaining a vehicle.

Jones is being held on $750,000, police said.

Police said the arrests stemmed from two drug investigations that have connections, one by Carteret authorities dubbed Operation Spotlight, and one by federal officials.

The investigations are continuing, police said, and they expect more arrests.
