An active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force faces charges of felony hit and run and obstructing an investigation after hitting a 5-year-old boy with his vehicle and fleeing the scene, Goldsboro police say.

More charges are expected against 23-year-old Russell Charles Dinkins, of Best Street in Goldsboro, police say. The investigation is ongoing.

The boy was crossing Berkeley Boulevard with his mother when he was struck about 7 p.m. Monday. He was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care and transferred to Greenville for further treatment at Vidant Medical Center. Police did not indicate the child’s condition, but they said the mother was uninjured.

Dinkins turned himself in Tuesday morning and was interviewed and released, police said. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon with assistance from the Office of Special Investigations at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, where police said Dinkins is stationed.

Dinkins was being held in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond, with a first court appearance set for Wednesday.
