Early Wednesday, police stopped a woman on suspicion of impaired driving who was wanted in Raleigh on charges that she had left scars and cigarette burns on one of her children last year.
Vanessa Denise Hinton, 25, is the subject of an arrest warrant that Raleigh police swore out in December. It accused her of felony child abuse.
According to the warrant, Hinton’s 9-year-old son has scars on the back of his neck and cigarette burns on his legs.
The warrant charged that the boy was hurt last August and September.
Raleigh police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan said Hinton’s case was opened after workers for Child Protective Services called about the boy.
When Hinton was booked at the Wake County Detention Center, where she was held in lieu of $100,000 bail, she told officials she has no permanent address.
Hourigan said Hinton’s children had been removed from her custody.
Garner police did charge her with driving while impaired. They had stopped her near 400 U.S. 70 East, arrest records showed.
