Fuquay-Varina Police arrested a Wake County public schools teacher Wednesday after discovering child pornography on his home computer.
Kevin Christopher Chamberlain, an English teacher at Holly Springs High School, has been charged with six felony counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to an arrest warrant filed Wednesday at the Wake County Clerk of Courts Office.
Investigators accuse Chamberlain of downloading online files that include photos and videos of preteen and teenage girls between the ages of 11 and 13 in various nude poses in a “lewd and lascivious manner,” according to the arrest warrant.
Chamberlain, 43, of 221 Purple Leaf Road in Fuquay-Varina was suspended with pay from his job on the day of his arrest, said Lisa Luten, a county schools spokeswoman.
Holly Springs High School Principal Brian Pittman informed parents of Chamberlain’s arrest.
“Today I was notified that an employee of our school, Mr. Chamberlain, has been arrested on charges related to child pornography,” Pittman wrote in a letter. “This employee has been suspended pending the completion of the criminal investigation and our own internal investigation.”
Pittman told parents that the criminal investigation and subsequent arrest of Chamberlain did not involve any inappropriate activity at the school or with any of its students.
Chamberlain became the target of a criminal investigation in November, said Susan Weis, a Fuquay-Varina spokeswoman.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Cary Police Department assisted with the investigation.
Just before 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, officers arrived at Chamberlain’s home. They placed him under arrest and used a search warrant to seize evidence of child pornography, Weis reported.
Chamberlain is in custody at the Wake County jail. He is being held in lieu of a $180,000 bail, according to the arrest warrant.
