A 26-year-old man was charged with murder Wednesday after his girlfriend's infant died from injuries from a child-abuse incident last week, the Randolph County Sheriff's Office said.

Dylon James Kirkpatrick had been arrested Feb. 9 on charges of felony child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon and was being held on $1 million bail when the infant died on Saturday, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies and county EMS crews found the child unresponsive Feb. 8 at a house on Baby Doe Street in Ramseur, the sheriff’s office said.

Kirkpatrick is the boyfriend of the child’s mother, authorities said. He is not related to the child, they added.

The baby had been taken to Randolph Hospital, then moved to the neonatal intensive care unit at Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem, the sheriff’s office said in a post on its Facebook page.

The office did not identify the mother or give the infant’s age.

WGHP-TV reported that detectives said Kirkpatrick attacked the infant with his hands and that they were considered deadly weapons because of his size relative to the baby.
