Man hit, killed by car on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh identified

A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh on Tuesday, police said.

Raleigh police were investigating the death of Ollie Thomas Merritt, of Raleigh, in a wreck at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 3400 block of Capital Boulevard.

Tuesday night after the incident, police described the incident as a “hit and run” but by Wednesday, police said it was not.

The driver, Erica Shanta Harris, of Raleigh, was merging from the second inside lane into the left lane in an attempt to pass another vehicle in traffic, police said.

Police said Merritt stepped into the road, and was not in a crosswalk, when he was hit.

A wreck report from the police department said Merritt may have been impaired at the tie he was hit.

The car that hit Merritt was traveling about 35 mph in a 45 mph zone and stopped about 500 feet after hitting him.

As of Wednesday afternoon, no charges had been filed in the incident. No other injuries were reported.

The northbound lands of the 3400 and 3500 blocks of Capital Boulevard were temporarily closed and drivers were asked to avoid the area.

No additional information was immediately available.
