Shooting homicide at West Raleigh apartment complex
Police were looking for a man who they say shot and killed his wife at an apartment off Lake Boone Trail late Thursday morning.
Police have charged Michael Rashun Sutton, 42, with shooting his wife, Tonya Lashawn Sutton, 39, just before 11:30 a.m. on Wesvill Court in the Grand Arbor Reserve apartment complex, just east of Rex Hospital.
Michael Sutton fled in a light blue, two-door 2005 Toyota Solara toward Wycliff Road. Police say Sutton, 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a medium build, was last seen wearing a blue shirt and khaki pants.
A man who called 911 said Tonya Sutton was with him in his apartment when Michael Sutton began firing through the front door, then entered the apartment and fired several more shots.
“I had to jump out my window,” the man said on a recording of the call released by police late Thursday.
The man, whose name was not released, said that he could see Tonya Sutton lying on the ground outside his apartment but that he was hiding behind a car in fear that Michael Sutton would come back.
“She’s dead,” he said. “Oh, my God.”
