Anthony Peaks Jr., 21, was charged Wednesday night with murder in the slaying a week ago of a man on Atlantic Street near Mutual Drive in the southern part of the city.
Police accused Peaks, who lives in Durham, of targeting Javaun Devonte Graves, 20.
Graves was found wounded after police answered a call about shots being fired on the night of June 11.
Graves died at Duke University Hospital a short time later.

Detectives said at the time that they did not think Graves was the victim of a random attack.
Police also charged Peak with obtaining property by false pretenses and possession of stolen goods from a case earlier this year.
He also was served with an arrest warrant for not showing up for a court date in 2013 on a drug charge.
Peak was held without bail.
