A murder suspect who is thought to have fled Durham to Louisiana in late June has been arrested, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Edu Antonio Varela-Lopez has been charged with first-degree murder. Lopez, who also goes by Tony Ochoa, is accused of shooting Franklin Martinez, who was found at Redwood Road and Interstate 85 in eastern Durham County near Falls Lake on June 28.
Sheriff’s investigators think Lopez fled to New Orleans within 2 hours of the killing and that he was staying with relatives there. Authorities in Louisiana helped Durham sheriff’s deputies find Lopez and arrest him Tuesday evening.
Lopez was awaiting transportation back to North Carolina on Friday.
