Man, 61, killed in hit-and-run collision at Durham bus stop

Police are seeking the driver after a pedestrian was fatally struck in a hit-and-run collision in northern Durham Saturday night, Durham police said.

The collision happened at 10:43 p.m. as the man was standing near the bus stop in the 900 block of Chalk Level Road and was struck by an unknown vehicle traveling west on Chalk Level Road, north of Braggtown, according to a news release.

A preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle ran off the road to the left, hit two signs and the pedestrian before fleeing. The pedestrian, 61-year-old Richard Ferguson Jr. of Durham, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The vehicle was described as possibly an orange Jeep with a hard top. It will likely have damage to the front end or hood and possibly to the windshield.
