Former Fuquay-Varina commissioner pleads guilty to sex offenses

A former Fuquay-Varina commissioner pleaded guilty Monday to five counts of misdemeanor sexual battery almost two years after being accused of taking indecent liberties with a child.

Jim Abernethy, who came under scrutiny several years ago after his wife requested and was granted a protective order, was sentenced to a 60-day jail sentence, ordered to register as a sex offender, pay restitution and not have any contact with the victims or their mother. The jail time was suspended and Abernethy will be on supervised probation for five years.

Abernethy was charged two years ago with taking indecent liberties with a child.

The accusations came after two sisters alerted their mother that he had made inappropriate comments and inappropriately touched the older sister.

Abernethy, a member of the Fuquay-Varina board of commissioners from 2009 to 2013, lost his bid for re-election two years ago.
