A 9-year-old boy was fatally shot Saturday night at a home in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte during a family celebration, police said.
Two adults and another child were injured in the shooting, and all three are expected to survive.
The party in the front yard of the home in the 6800 block of Fieldvale Place was under way when police said they received multiple calls about a shooting shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday.
As officers headed to the scene, authorities say family members of the injured 9-year-old flagged them down.
The boy, whose identity was not released late Saturday, was taken to the hospital where she died. Police said the other three victims were treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police initially described the nine-year-old as female based, they said, on preliminary information from the case. But in a news release early Sunday, they said the victim is male.
"It's a sad state of affairs," CMPD Deputy Chief Jeff Estes said at a news conference from the scene. "We have a lot of soul searching to do when, as a city and as a country, a nine-year old girl isn't safe playing in the front yard."
Authorities ask anyone with information about the shooting to call 704-432-TIPS to speak with a homicide detective, or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
