A man was shot and killed while trying to invade a residence at a South LaSalle Street apartment complex shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday, police said.
Police called the case a homicide investigation, but it was unclear whether they planned to charge anyone in the case. Investigators treat all violent deaths as possible criminal cases.
Officers were dispatched at 1:13 a.m. to a report of a shooting in the 300 block of South LaSalle Street, where hundreds live in the Duke Manor Apartments.
Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said investigators believe the dead man was trying to get into an apartment. She did not disclose his name.
A person who lived in the apartment was hurt in the incident and taken to a hospital for treatment, Michael said. That person’s injury was not a gunshot, Michael said, but police did not disclose what it was or how seriously the person was hurt.
Investigators and forensics experts were still on the scene at 9 a.m., gathering evidence.
A security guard at Duke Manor was wounded Aug. 24 when two guards broke up an apparent home invasion after dark. One guard was show multiple times, but survived.
There have been no arrests in that case.
