Search warrants made public Friday indicate that police found open containers of alcohol in the cars of both a wrong-way driver and the motorist he collided head-on with on Interstate 440 last month. Both drivers were killed.
Detectives used the search warrant to recover airbag information from a data recorder in one of the cars involved in the crash, a 2008 Ford Focus.
The wreck happened Dec. 22 shortly before 1:40 a.m. on I-440 near New Bern Avenue, police reported.
Senior Officer J.E. Rigsbee, in the search warrant, stated that the driver of the Ford Focus, Jesus Leon Galera, 34, of Raleigh, was traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-440.
Police say the second driver, Alejandro Mendez Gonzalez, 21, of Raleigh, was traveling west on the interstate in a 2002 Honda Accord.
Both men were alone in their cars, police reported.
