One man has been arrested in the Monday shooting death of a cab driver at a northeast Raleigh apartment complex off Old Wake Forest Road Monday, police said early Tuesday.
Police charged Major Earl Edwards Jr., 25, of 111 Middle St. in Louisburg with murder in the the death of Jose Nicolas Dominguez, 55. Edwards was taken from detective headquarters to the Wake County Detention Center and was being held without bail. He was expected to go before a judge Tuesday.
Dominguez, who was working for Amigo Taxi, was found dead near his cab in the parking lot of the Hodges Creek Apartments at about 1:30 a.m.
Homicide detectives said Monday that it appeared that several people were involved in the attack, and they may have fled in a white car.
They said their investigation was continuing after Edwards’ arrest. They did not disclose what led them to him.
It was not clear whether the killing stemmed from a robbery attempt or had some other motive, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said Monday.
A man who called 911 said Dominguez was lying in the parking lot and wasn’t breathing, according to a recording of the call released Monday.
“Ma’am, he’s not moving,” the caller told the dispatcher.
Hodges Creek Drive is a dead-end street through apartments, which are between East Millbrook Road and Spring Forest Road.
Edwards’ criminal record does not include violent crime. He was convicted of felony breaking and entering and felony larceny in Wake County in 2013 and has two misdemeanor drug convictions in Franklin County.
He was placed on concurrent probation in all three instances and finished that without incident, according to state records.
