Law enforcement officers late Saturday night arrived an an American Legion parking lot where the vehicle of a suspected drunken driver collided with a woman leaving a birthday party.
Police say several of the woman’s friends then assaulted the driver. Emergency workers transported the woman and the driver to WakeMed in Raleigh for treatment of their injuries.
Police charged the suspected drunken driver, Jose Carlos Colon, 39, with driving while intoxicated and careless and reckless driving, Stacy Beard, a Clayton town spokesperson reported Sunday. The police investigation of the incident is ongoing and charges may be filed against the persons who assaulted Colon, Beard reported.
It was just after 11 p.m. and a birthday party had just ended at the American Legion building at 1300 Old U.S. 70, Beard reported.
Police say Colon was behind the wheel of a vehicle that hit Nastassia Donyun Little, 29, in the parking lot. Little suffered a broken leg, Beard reported. Witnesses told police that Carlos was assaulted by several of the party-goers and sustained injuries not considered life-threatening.
Clayton police officers described the parking lot as a scene that was in a state of confusion when they arrived. Deputies with the Johnston County Sherriff’s Office, troopers with the N.C.State Highway Patrol and Wilson’s Mills police helped to control the scenes, Beard reported.
