The father charged Wednesday with murdering his wife and infant daughter tried to take his own life by cutting himself and ingesting “toxic substances,” police said Thursday.
Elhadji Diop, 53, remains in WakeMed Hospital after police found him seriously injured Tuesday evening in a townhouse on Farm Gate Road, off Western Boulevard. Police say they also found Diop’s wife, Aminata Drame, 40, and their daughter Fatim Diop dead in the townhouse.
Police charged Elhadji Diop with two counts of murder.
It’s not clear when Drame and her daughter died or how. A dispatcher with the New York City Police Department called Wake County’s 911 center shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to say that Elhadji Diop had posted something on his Facebook page indicating that his wife and daughter were dead and that he didn’t want to go on living.
“He’s posting like he’s going to end his life and today is his last day,” said the caller, according to a recording released Wednesday.
The caller, whose name was not released, said Diop’s niece had seen the Facebook posts in Senegal and had called her husband in New York, who then called police there. After the message was relayed to Raleigh, police went to the town house in the 5900 block of Farm Gate Road and found the family.
